Crime in the U.S.: 2024 BJS Report and Self-Defense Tips

by Jeff Young

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), part of the U.S. Department of Justice, releases its annual crime report every October, detailing the previous year’s data. The 2024 report, published this month, paints a sobering picture. Compiling this data takes time, but the numbers demand attention.

In 2024, the BJS reported:

• 560,890 Rapes

• 642,150 Robberies

• 1,341,950 Aggravated Assaults

• 1,145,260 Violent Crimes resulting in injury to victims

That’s 1 violent victimization for every 42.9 people aged 12 or older—about the number of passengers on a city bus. Breaking it down, that’s 3,677 aggravated assaults every day.

At Lone Pine Tactical, we believe knowledge and preparation are your best defenses. Follow our AAA principle:

• Be Aware: Understand the risks these statistics highlight.

• Be Alert: Stay vigilant in all public spaces, no matter the setting.

• Be Armed: Equip yourself to protect your life and loved ones.

Self-Defense Tips to Stay Safe

To empower you against these risks, here are practical self-defense tips:

1. Trust Your Instincts: If a situation or person feels off, don’t ignore it. Act quickly to remove yourself from potential danger.

2. Practice Situational Awareness: Scan your surroundings—avoid distractions like phones or earbuds in unfamiliar or high-risk areas.

3. Learn Basic Self-Defense Techniques: Enroll in a self-defense class to master skills like striking, escaping holds, or using everyday objects for protection.

4. Carry a Legal Self-Defense Tool: Depending on your local laws, consider carrying pepper spray, a personal alarm, or a firearm (with proper training and permits).

5. Travel in Groups When Possible: There’s safety in numbers, especially in high-crime areas or at night.

6. Secure Your Home: Use strong locks, motion-sensor lights, and a security system to deter break-ins.

7. Stay Physically Fit: Strength and stamina can help you escape or fight back if needed. Regular exercise boosts your confidence and capability.

8. De-escalate When Safe: If confronted, use calm verbal communication to defuse tension, but be ready to act if the situation escalates.

Crime is a reality, but so is your ability to protect yourself. Stay informed, stay prepared, and stay safe with Lone Pine Tactical.
