What Are the Chances You’ll Ever Need to Defend Yourself? The Data May Surprise You.
by Jeff Young
“I never thought it would happen here.”
Those are words we hear after almost every violent incident. Whether it’s a home invasion, a robbery, or the recent tragedy in Twin Falls, people often believe these events only happen somewhere else—until they happen close to home.
One of the most common questions we hear at Lone Pine Tactical is:
“What are the odds I’ll ever actually need to use my firearm for self-defense?”
It’s a fair question, and thanks to several large national studies, we have better data than ever before.
Defensive Gun Use Happens More Often Than Most People Think
A landmark 2021 National Firearms Survey, led by Georgetown University researcher Dr. William English, surveyed over 54,000 Americans, including nearly 16,700 firearm owners.
The study estimated that Americans use firearms for self-defense approximately 1.67 million times every year.
One of the most surprising findings?
Nearly 82% of those defensive encounters ended without a shot being fired.
In most cases, simply presenting a firearm caused the criminal to stop or flee.
Other key findings included:
Most defensive firearm uses involve a handgun.
The majority occur on the owner’s property.
About one in four happen inside the home.
More than half involve multiple attackers.
These findings reinforce something we emphasize in every class:
A firearm is a defensive tool—not something you hope to use, but something you hope you never have to use.
Looking at Lifetime Odds
On a yearly basis, the chances of experiencing a defensive gun use appear relatively small.
However, when researchers looked at those numbers over the course of a lifetime, the picture changed dramatically.
Using the survey data and assuming decades of firearm ownership, estimates suggest:
A firearm owner may have roughly a 70% lifetime chance of experiencing a defensive gun use.
Someone living in a firearm-owning household has approximately a 61% lifetime chance.
Even if you only count incidents where shots were actually fired, the lifetime probability still falls in the 15–19% range.
No statistic can predict what will happen to any individual.
But viewed over decades rather than a single year, defensive gun use is far from the extremely rare event many people assume.
Preparation Matters More Than the Numbers
Owning a firearm is only one part of personal protection.
Knowing when to act…
Knowing when not to act…
Understanding Idaho law…
Making sound decisions under stress…
Safely handling your firearm around family members…
These are the skills that truly make the difference.
Simply owning a gun doesn’t prepare someone for a rapidly unfolding emergency.
Training does.
Responsible Gun Ownership Includes Responsibility at Home
Any honest discussion about firearms must also include safe ownership.
According to the CDC, most firearm deaths each year are suicides rather than homicides. That reality highlights why every firearm owner should practice secure storage, recognize warning signs of emotional crisis, and ensure firearms are inaccessible to unauthorized users.
Responsible ownership means protecting your loved ones both from criminal threats and from preventable tragedies.
You Hope You Never Need It
Nobody carries a fire extinguisher because they expect their house to burn down.
People wear seat belts hoping they’ll never be needed.
Fire extinguishers, first aid kits, CPR training, and concealed carry all have something in common:
They’re preparations for events you hope never happen.
The goal isn’t to look for trouble.
The goal is to be capable if trouble finds you.
